The Will Brown controversy......

A little prodding found an old Times Union letter to the editor about Will Brown. The letter, titled "Great Danes Win in Spite of Coach", was written by a one Paul Koehn, who is entitled to his own opinion, but obviously has his head up his ass. At the time of the letter, February 12, all Coach Brown had done was have the Danes in a 12-2 run, right in the middle of conference play. Since Brown took over for Scott Beeten in 2001, he turned the Danes from a 5-win team to a 20 win team this season, 40 minutes away from an AMAZING NCAA bid. How did he do it? Did they win "in spite" of the coaching? Of course not. The players on the court are his players.....recruited and signed by him and the staff, and developed into the fine team they are now.

Well, apparently I wasn't the only outraged reader, because the Times Useless, er....Union published several letters the following Sunday in strong support of the work that Coach Brown and his staff have done. In a 5 year stretch, the UAlbany basketball program has been transformed from an embarassment to a team poised to enter the NCAA tournament. More importantly, the balance of power in the Albany area has shifted, and the little Saints over in Loudonville find themselves with less of a market share of the Albany hoop fans. I will give Coach McCaffrey credit....he deserves every accolade imaginable for what he did this year. My point being, is that Albany is now a 2-team college town, and much of that credit should be given to Will Brown.
